Longevity Risk

Almost all of the numbers that you would really like to know when you are planning your retirement are completely unknowable.

We have no way of knowing what the returns of the stock market will be. We don’t know how tax rates will change over the course of the next few decades. Inflation, especially health care inflation, is a big black box. But there’s an even more fundamental number that we often don’t even think about – our own longevity.

Your life expectancy isn’t always the most uplifting topic to discuss, but it has an absolutely mammoth impact on what your retirement income plan should look like. Just like the numbers above, we can never have exact answers, but we can make educated guesses. This time we have a few ideas to help you start thinking through the question – and what you should do with your (approximate) answers.

As always, standing by if you’d like to discuss.
